Why meditation?

Why Meditation

We always try to change the things around us. We change our job, house, partner, car or whatever we think will make us happier. However what about ourselves? Would it be possible that we ourselves can improve and thus not just the things around us? Now one could argue that improving ourselves can be done without meditation. That could be true, but meditation is one of the best ways to understand ourselves because it makes us more aware and we can just do it ourselves without needing to pay or changing anything.

When we look at our thoughts, we automatically take some distance from those thoughts. We become aware of them instead of becoming them. Also we learn that we basically can control which thoughts we want to keep. We can let go of things that are not good for us. It doesn’t mean that those thoughts will disappear, although that could eventually happen, but it means that we can observe those thoughts without keeping or becoming them.

The thoughts we have are connected to our ego. We all have an ego and this is not a bad thing. However, it becomes negative when our ego is controlling us. Anger and grief are possible results of this. Basically we give our control away. This will not only influence our relations, but also our own health.

There are much more reasons why meditation is something we all should do. If we can feel happiness from within ourselves, we are not dependent on all those things we try to change and control from outside ourselves. This will not just make ourselves happier and calmer, but certainly will also make us a nicer human being to be around with. From this more happy and calm state we are also more efficient in our daily activities. It will be easier to focus and do our tasks and we will preserve more energy. So meditation has advantages on numerous levels and we all have access to it. Why should we not make advantage if it?
