Higher and lower forms of energy

Real peace comes from within

A “higher form of energy” is sometimes used to describe a state of awareness that can be found and trained in meditation. The lower form of energy is supposed to be when we are busy in every day life trying to achieve something and going from one thing to another feed by our ego, being controlled by our instincts. It is called lower because it is the same as animals do and basically focusses on the four bodily necessities; sleeping, eating, mating and defending, which is also done by animals. It is said we don’t reach our real potential if we just live by our instincts.

Regardless if this description is true or false, the problem with the above is that higher and lower are words that trigger our ego. If we think we are higher because of meditation, the result is the opposite of what it should be. Meditation should lower our false ego instead of making it bigger. For that reason it can be called endless and temporary forms of energy. That state of awareness that is always within us, is always there and thus can be called endless. It was there some years earlier, it will be there tomorrow and although the body changes all the time, this doesn’t change. If you have three cars or no car, a partner or no parter, a house or no house, it doesn’t change what is there within us. We only have to be aware of it.

The other temporary form of energy that is dictated by our body is also there and is always changing. It can be compared with the waves of the ocean and because it is always changing it is a temporary form of energy. Generally we are focused on this temporary form of energy. When we understand and experience there is a more endless form of energy our knowledge and way of thinking can start to change slowly. This process often starts because we experience that this temporary form of energy is not giving us any rest and the pleasure we get from it is very short lived.

The temporary form of energy gives faster rewards. If we drink a beer now we can feel better in some minutes (before we often feel even worse some time later). If we are looking for a quick fix this form of energy is more tempting. Especially since experiencing the calmness and satisfaction of the other form of energy will take some time. At first we experience only some glimpse of it. But if you for example can choose between drinking a beer or doing some meditation, try to remember that a quick fix is often not the best fix. We can aim for the very short term, or for the longer term.
