Being satisfied

I came across an interesting quote from the Greek philosopher Plato:

“People who are not satisfied with what they have will not be satisfied with what they get”. -Plato

Many times we can be compared to the donkey that has a carrot in front of him on a line. Every step the donkey takes it thinks to come closer to what he really wants, but in reality it comes never any closer. We human beings have the same tendency. We think we feel better if certain things around us would change and often try our best to achieve this. However that change will not suddenly make us feel different when we ourselves stay the same and thus we keep finding something else that we think needs to be changed.

If our awareness is not growing and we stay the same then all other things around is will not make us more happy. Doesn’t matter which house we live in, in what country we are or with what car we drive. Being satisfied can only be a result of us feeling more satisfied with ourselves, because in the end we always live with ourselves and to achieve that we need to grow into better persons. If our awareness is getting higher and our understanding of ourselves is getting better, the result should be that our false ego get’s smaller and we become a better person and thus we become more happy with ourselves. Meditation can help with all of this, but it shouldn’t just stop when we are in our daily live activities. Sitting in meditation makes an ideal situation to be aware as a practice and the more natural it becomes, the more we can incorporate it in our daily lives. The above quote from Plato makes it clear that being satisfied is not about getting more things, but it is about ourselves.
